Somerset Opera was founded in 1974 by Brian Cresswell, who is its Artistic Director until 2005, as SCAT Opera but soon found the first of several new homes and changed its name first to Somerset Opera Group (we're still known as SOG) then to Somerset Opera. Our constitution provides that "The object of the group shall be to foster and promote the education of the general public in the appreciation of music." Somerset Opera is a registered charity (number 277240) and is a member of (Taunton Association for the Performing Arts) that is supported by Taunton Deane Borough Council, NODA and NFMS (Making Music)
